Donald Keith Smith - US Air Force (February 28, 1948 - February 29, 1952)
Donald Keith Smith enlisted in the Air Force on February 28, 1948 and given Serial Number 13166764. He was sent to basic training at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas in March of 1948.
On June 1, 1948, after Basic Training, he was sent to Scott Field for Electronic school and Repeater school in Bellevue, Peoria, Illinois. It was was basically an amplifier for land line phones.
He arrived in January 1949 for his first posting at Offutt AFB in Nebraska.
In August of 1949, he was assigned to a detachment at the ammunition factory site in Mead, Saunders County, Nebraska, where all long range communication equipment was located.
In December of 1950, Don was at work when the Air Force called and said he was scheduled for the Korea deployment so ‘where are you?’. He had checked the orders that had been posted and he wasn’t on the list to go. But the Air Force felt otherwise. He had about 45 minutes to get to town pack his gear and get back. His wife Marie was pregnant with their first son Mark and he was very worried about the stress of the sudden information. They took off for the farm and had Marie’s brother Ray drive them to the base and made it just in time. He got on a truck to take him and other soldiers to Offutt Air Force Base. They started to pull out when the orderly room clerk came running out yelling and said the shipment had been cancelled. A bullet had literally been dodged as the Chinese had just jumped into the fight.
After being discharged, Don continued to work at the Mead plant as a civilian.
